From the Grooming Table...

Now that spring is here, the first set of fertilizer is soon to be put down. Be aware that your pet can have reactions to fertilizer. Reactions can include upper respiratory problems, sores on feet and/or under-body. To avoid these problems, fertilize your yard in two sections, two weeks apart. Have your pet use the unfertilized grass section. After two weeks, have your pet use the previously fertilized section.

If your pet does get sores, try putting A&D ointment on them, but if they persist longer than a few days, see your vet.
